About
Miki is a Japanese/New Zealand artist and illustrator working in realist graphite works. She enjoys thinking on ideas of identity; how cultural attitudes form pieces of ourselves and how we feel about it all. The works intersect portraiture, object and touches of surrealism, often influenced by ideas of ‘femininity’ and what that entails for the modern woman. Zooming in on small spaces of our bodies, characteristics, and objects to form various introspectives of the weight we're left to carry. With previous study in graphic design she employs a level of finishing, experimentation and creative problem solving to find her way to the ideas she wants to convey. Often finding satisfaction in pushing the boundaries of simple mediums like pencil/graphite in service of these ideas.
Her ink paintings are an extension of these themes brought to more graphic endings. It has often provided an outlet to explore her Japanese heritage and it's place in New Zealand.
